Welcome to the Learning Center of Northeastern NY!

We are helping families with the challenge of dyslexia by providing free tutoring for children.

Our Mission:

The Learning Center of Northeastern New York is committed to helping children with dyslexia learn to improve their ability to function completely and confidently in a world in which written language and learning skills are essentially important. The Learning center provides free counselling, coaching and instruction to children and their families to achieve this critical goal.

The Problem

Millions of school children with dyslexia endure frustration and demoralization every day as they struggle to acquire the skills that many of us take for granted. Learning to read and write can seem like overwhelming tasks to these children, an estimated five percent of all children. In its various forms dyslexia can affect a child's ability to read, write, perform mathematical operations and understand important spatial concepts in the world around them.

Where does a child struggling with reading, writing or math go for help?

The Solution

For more than two decades, the Scottish Rite Masons, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, have been national leaders in the effort to help children and their families overcome the difficult obstacles of dyslexia. With more than 80 active dyslexia centers in 13 states we tackle the challenge of dyslexia by providing free tutoring for children with dyslexia and by training a growing cadre of highly skilled and dedicated tutors.

Our learning centers provide one-on-one tutoring at no cost to children or their families. Children are eligible regardless of economic status, race, religion, or Masonic affiliation. The positive impact of early intervention on the lives of those children is enormous and inspires our commitment to the program.

Our Approach

The curriculum used for tutoring and tutor training at the Learning Center of NENY and all Masonic learning centers is based on the Orton-Gillinghdm approach. Developed in the 1920s, this approach uses a sequential, multi-sensory phonetic teaching and spelling methodology. A variety of sensory data is used to help children understand the written word.

Children receive one-on-one tutoring twice a week after regular school hours. This individualized instruction allows for the curriculum to be tailored to each child as necessary, and progress is made in small, readily quantifiable steps. The provided services equip children with the skills and the confidence they need to approach learning with eagerness and without fear.

“My daughter has made the most incredible progress through her hard work and the hard work of her tutors. Her entire outlook on school work has changed. I can't thank you enough. You are transforming lives, one child at a time.”
-Mother of a student at the Nashua, NH Learning Center

“When I first learned that I was dyslexic, I was scared. I thought there was something wrong with me and that I was stupid. The Dyslexia Center taught me how to read, and now I know that I can do anything, if I put my mind to it.”
-Anthony, a student at the Chicago Learning Center
